2016 Season Launched

són launched their new season in some considerable style last month, performing an intoxicating blend of old and new as part of the subscription series at Turner Sims, Southampton  – one of the premiere concert halls of the south. Following on from their debut year, where they shared the stage with presenters and performers such as John Suchet and David Owen Norris in their innovative and barrier-breaking “unwrapped” series, són continue their sequence of engaging and inspiring programming throughout this, their second full concert series.

Including concerts based around a series theme of “Reimagined, recomposed”, són present the well-known in juxtaposition with newer interpretations. Max Richter’s modern classic The Four Seasons Recomposed, an ideal example of such musical treatment, is a centrepiece of the 2016-17 year, and features in April 2017 with soloist Thomas Gould.

Their opening concert in October 2016 combined Vivaldi and Piazzolla’s Four Seasons, in a dizzying mix of old and new as surveyed from totally different continents. Daniel Rowland, the charismatic solo violinist, brought great energy and focus to the performance, prompting an immediate standing ovation from the Turner Sims crowd. You can read our blog article about the event, including audience reactions and reviews, here.

són also make their debut in Romsey Abbey during the year, performing in one of Hampshire’s most beautiful venues in March 2017. They complete their season with a welcome return to the “Unwrapped” format, with David Owen Norris engaging the listener in the treasures of Enigma Variations in Elgar Unwrapped, only days after Elgar’s own 160th birthday in June 2017. As an added bonus in this concert, there’s not only interval tea and cake (what could be better for a summer’s day with Mr Elgar?!) but there’s a premiere performance, too, of George Morton‘s new arrangement for chamber orchestra of Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No 4.

And finally, the Supersónic Philharmonic returns! Continuing their passionate commitment to music education, són strengthen their work with new hub partners Southampton Music Hub as they present supersónic ’17 together, the second installment of their incredibly successful mini youth orchestra project for grade 2-5 students across the south.
