són confirmed in new partnership with Southampton Music Hub

són – Southampton’s professional orchestra – are delighted to announce their recent appointment as a new hub partner with Southampton Music Hub, the City’s music service.

Since its inception only a year ago, one of the core aims of són has been to nurture young musical talent and forge links with education organisations across the region. The new partnership consolidates this mission and strengthens pre-existing ties between són and the Hub.

In July last year the orchestra were commissioned to present an interactive workshop for the city’s budding young brass players. són Horn offered over 300 of Southampton’s 8-11 year olds their first taste of French Horn playing in just one day. This July, in conjunction with both the Hub and young mentors from the University of Southampton, són are offering supersónic – a fun-filled three day orchestral summer school, promising to be many children’s first experience of playing in a full orchestra.

són are thrilled to join the other hub partners, all connected under one educational roof. Anca Campanie, Associate Director, said:

“It’s a great honour for us. It shows we’re being taken seriously as a musical organisation, and that our deep commitment to music education is being recognised – it’s an endorsement for our portfolio of work so far. It’s also satisfying to know that, less than a year after són was born, we’re now linked in a partnership with major arts organisations, both locally and nationally.”

As well as their work with Southampton Music Hub, són continue their own educational and family events, too. A special concert this June unites Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream with one of the UK’s best-loved children’s authors, James Mayhew, painting live on a giant canvas while a 30-piece orchestra performs behind him. Also this summer, són strengthen their bonds with the city’s special schools in selected performances and interactive workshops in June and July. More details of this will be released soon.

Anca Campanie concludes:

“We’re looking forward to strengthening our relationship with the Hub, and developing all our education projects in the region. This is a great motivation to do even more, and continue changing young musician’s lives.”
