SÓN Launch with Sibelius Unwrapped

Orchestra choose all-Sibelius for launch concert

In this 150th birthday year of the greatest Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius, it seems apt that són – Southampton’s brand new professional chamber orchestra – chose his music with which to debut later in the year. “Sibelius Unwrapped” has just been announced, and són are delighted to unveil the details just as advance sales and booking opens at Turner Sims, one of the South’s most highly-regarded concert halls.

“Sibelius is a towering figure,” says són Artistic Director Robin Browning, “both for many UK musicians (somehow we’ve always embraced the great Finn’s style readily) and also for me – he’s my favourite composer. So, it made perfect sense when planning our launch concert to contribute to the global celebrations for his birthday [the són launch is a matter of days prior to his actual birth date of 8th December].”

In discussion with Kevin Appleby, Turner Sims manager, són have devised a format where they “unwrap” the music during the first half of the concert, working with a guest presenter – in this case David Owen Norris – to show the music’s contours and inner working. Following the interval, the orchestra perform the entire programme complete and uninterrupted. Robin continues: “I’m certain that, on stage, we’ll be able to detect a subtle shift in the audience’s listening, thanks to the extra input we’ve all enjoyed from David in the first half.”
